CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
University College School was founded in 1830 by the proprietors of what was then the University of London, now University College London. The nomination of the headmaster was placed in the Council and the Reverend Henry Browne was appointed. The School opened at 16 Gower Street on 1 November 1830, and was often referred to as 'the Junior School'. By February 1831 it had outgrown its quarters, and in 1832 it was brought within the walls of the University, with a joint headmastership of Thomas Hewitt Key and Henry Malden. The School was remarkably original: there were no compulsory subjects and no rigid form system. Most boys learnt Latin and French, and many learnt German. Mathematics, chemistry, Greek and English were also taught. The aim throughout was mental discipline, and as it contributed to that, so each subject was judged. There was no religious teaching, and the boys were of many creeds and denominations. Under the University College London (Transfer) Act of 1905, University College London became part of the University of London, and its School was created a separate corporation, moving away to new buildings in Hampstead in 1907.
