Peter Shore (b1924) was Labour Member of Parliament for Stepney, 1964-1974; Stepney and Poplar, 1974-1983, and Bethnal Green and Stepney, 1983-1997. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, 1965-1966; Joint Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Technology, 1966-1967; Privy Counsellor, 1967; Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, 1967-1969; Minister without Portfolio, 1969-1970; Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, 1969-1970; Opposition Spokesman on Europe, 1970-1974, on Foreign Affairs, 1979-1980, on Treasury and Economic Affairs, 1980-1983, and on Trade and Industry, 1983-1984; Secretary of State for Trade, 1974-1976, and the Environment, 1976-1979; Shadow Leader of the Commons, 1983-1987; Member of the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, 1987-1997, and on Standards in Public Life, 1994-1997. On his retirement from the House of Commons he was created a life peer in 1997 becoming Baron Shore of Stepney.
