Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The London and River Plate Bank was incorporated in 1862 as the London, Buenos Ayres, and River Plate Bank. It changed its name to the London and River Plate Bank in 1865, omitting the words 'Buenos Ayres' as inappropriate as it was opening branches elsewhere. The Bank expanded over the years to have operations in Uruguay, Brazil and Chile. In October 1923, Lloyds Bank brought the London and River Plate Bank and the London and Brazilian Bank together to form the Bank of London and South America, to stop the two banks being in direct competition with each other.
