Administrative/Biographical history:
Standard Chartered Bank was formed in 1969 when the Standard Bank of British South Africa merged with the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China.
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China was founded in 1853 by James Wilson, with branches in Mumbai, Kolkata and Shanghai. Branches in Hong Kong and Singapore were opened in 1859. The bank had a major role in the development of trade in cotton, indigo, tea, rice, sugar, tobacco and silk. In 1957 the bank bought the Eastern Bank and the Cyprus branches of the Ionian Bank.
The Standard Bank of British South Africa was founded in South Africa by John Paterson in 1862. The bank financed the development of diamond fields and gold mines, before expanding into Southern, Central and Eastern Africa. It merged with the Bank of West Africa in 1965.
